Episode 4: The Story of Nian

Nanyen Lau

Nanyen Lau, a proud Chinese-Canadian born and raised in Edmonton, is an educator and musician. Growing up, she was introduced to her culture, traditional music, dance, stories, and language from her family and through Edmonton’s Chinese Bilingual Education program (ECBEA). At a young age she began learning the traditional Chinese instrument Erhu (two-stringed fiddle), has studied abroad at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, and is an active member of the Edmonton Chinese Philharmonica orchestra. After graduating from the University of Alberta she completed her master’s degree in teaching Chinese as a second language in Qingdao, China, and now hopes to pass on her language and culture to the next generation of young learners.

You can catch her volunteering or performing for various local Chinese community events during Chinese New Year, Heritage Festival, and other cultural holidays!
